Tips to organizing your closet.

Do you ever wake up and think, “I can’t find anything to wear”?  Check out our tips for organizing your closet so you can look your best each day with minimum decision making required.

Follow our tips below and take a day to completely revamp and organize your closet. You’ll feel much better you did!

Closet Cleansing: If you don’t love it, don’t pack it. On vacation, you look your best because you bring your newest and nicest outfits, leaving the backups at home. Thin your closet according to the same principle. Aim to remove 50 percent of items taking up space.

Group Clothing Together: Create 3 piles: dump, donate and keep. The “keep” pile should not consist of clothing that is simply wearable, but clothing that makes you look your best. If you haven’t worn an item in six months, donate or dump accordingly.

Unused Items Go Elsewhere: Store seasonal items or articles of clothing that hold sentimental value in a guest room closet or another part of the house. If you have a larger closet, separate your clothes by season. If you have a tall closet with several rows of hanging rods, place the current season’s clothes on the lowest level, and move out-of-season clothes up to the tallest rods.

Arrange Your Closet Like A Boutique: Structure your closet to resemble a boutique, with fewer items and plenty of space between them, as opposed to the cluttered racks of a discount outlet.

Create Event Groupings: Work clothing in one area, going out items — such as sexy tops or dresses — in another, athletic wear in a third, and so on.

Hang Outfits Together: Consider hanging different components of outfits together, as opposed to hanging all of your tops in one space, your pants in another, etc. To assemble an outfit, hang the top next to the skirt and place your pumps beneath it. This way, the outfit as a whole is ready to wear.

Better Hangers, Better Quality: Invest in quality wood, padded or plastic hangers — as opposed to using the skimpy wire ones from the dry cleaner. Also be sure to hang all garments facing the same direction (and with the hangers all hooked the same way).

ClosetOrganize Accessories: Hang scarves on a hanger or scarf rack, and belts and ties on hangers or racks. Use a shoe rack to keep shoes organized. Recycle old shoe boxes that clutter the floor. (You don’t need to keep every pair of shoes in your closet all year long, either!)

Make A Place For Everything: Place baskets in your closet for laundry and dry cleaning. Install hooks on the closet wall to hang up hats, handbags and tote bags. Store clothes that you want to save in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag. These bags compress the clothing, making it much easier to fit under the bed or in a closet. Save only the clothes that you think will be worn!
