Looking to buy a home?

We’d like to provide some helpful information that will aid you in this exciting step!  First and foremost it is important to find a real estate agent you can trust.  The Lawhead Team has many years experience and are a very reputable real estate team.

Keep in mind once you sign your mortgage papers, the responsibility for the payments on your new property are all yours, no matter what circumstances come about in your life.  Make sure you are financially secure before taking this big step.

Next, you need to get pre-qualified for a home loan.  Do this before you go searching for a house so you know exactly what is in your price range.  It is quite disappointing when you find your “dream home” only to later find out it is way out of your loan amount you qualify for.  Securing a mortgage can be a lengthy process and being pre-qualified is the first step in that process.

If you have kids or are planning on starting a family in your new home, make sure you buy a house big enough to accommodate everyone.  It is also important to pay attention to safety as well, especially if you are looking at a house with stairs or a swimming pool. If you can, find out if the previous owners raised kids in the house.  If so, you should be guaranteed to be purchasing a child-safe house.

It is helpful to have a friend or knowledgeable associate accompany you when looking at homes.  By taking someone that has no ownership interest in the property will be able to look at the property from a bystanders point of view and may notice faults in the property you may not have noticed.  And remember, don’t fall in love with the first house you see.

Make sure to get an inspection by a professional.  Try to avoid houses that will need extensive renovation before moving in.  They can not only waste your money but may also cause you to have to rent a place while your new house is being worked on.

It is key to stay organized.  Keep all of your research and housing information together in a folder so all your data can be found in one place.  Most realtors have checklists and can provide you with one that includes everything from creating a budget to getting a mortgage.  Checklists are helpful to ensure you breeze right through the process from start to finish without missing anything.
